Now living reclusive lives away from the world of modelling, Derek Zoolander (Ben Stiller) and Hansel (Owen Wilson) are lured out of obscurity when Billy Zane delivers a message from the 'amowzing' Alexanya Atoz (Kristen Wiig). But Melanie (Penélope Cruz) from Interpol's fashion division is also looking for Zoolander to solve the mysterious deaths of pretty pop stars. Could such a fiendish plot have megalomaniacal fashionista Mugatu (Will Ferrell) behind it?
Following on from the original 2001 film, Zoolander 2 (AKA 2lander) returns to the quirky and hilarious world of its male model title character. A snappy recap at the start fills the gaps of the previous 15 years and there's plenty to go on with even if your memory of the original is a little hazy. The pace is fast for most of the film and the humour is juvenile and repetitive but works surprisingly well with characters that are well-drawn caricatures. Transgender model All (Benedict Cumberbatch) steals the two scenes he appears in and Sting camps it up in a role that is pivotal to the plot. Celebrity appearances come thick and fast with Kiefer Sutherland, Justin Bieber, Anna Wintour, Naomi Campbell (the ad for Aqua Vitae is hilarious) and Susan Sarandon among the highlights, and the brief appearance by Susan Boyle (no, really!) provides a huge laugh.
Zoolander 2 is light (much lighter than anything we've seen lately) and a very enjoyable film. It takes the humour and charm from the original and takes it up a notch or two. It's not a great movie (and never intends to be) but it succeeds in telling a story that is fresh, exciting and very funny. (ME)
