Opening with the 911 call on the day of Whitney Houston's death, Whitney: Can I Be Me? sets itself up as less of a celebration of the singer's life and more of an expose into the decades which contributed to her death. Relying heavily on unseen footage from her 1999 European tour and featuring those closest to her (apparently), Whitney's sad demise (spoiler alert: there were drugs involved) is played out in repetitive detail. But amidst the drama and sadness there is also that voice and that joyous smile to lift the tone; hearing her sing is worth the ticket price alone.
There's not much we didn't already know, and there's something sadly voyueristic about this kind of film. Whitney: Can I Be Me? is one way to remember the extraordinary talent of Whitney Houston. The other way is to pop on some of her timeless tunes and dance with somebody who loves you. We'd recommend the latter.
