Ray Kroc (Michael Keaton) is selling milkshake mixers to diners across America when he receives a large order from a hamburger restaurant in California. His curiosity gets the better of him, and he visits brothers Dick and Mac (Nick Offerman and John Carroll Lynch) at the first McDonald's restaurant. Ray becomes obsessed with the ways they've streamlined the production of fast food. The brothers are reluctant to expand their business, but Ray sees the potential of franchising the business. Risking it all, including his marriage to Ethel (Laura Dean), Ray throws himself into creating an empire.
Based on true events, The Founder isn't just a story about the origins of the fast food giant, but the story of a man determined to succeed. Michael Keaton is brilliant (as ever) and brings an intensity to a performance that is as vulnerable as it is ruthless. As it's based on a 'true' story it concludes with the mandatory photo montage (because it makes it all the better if it's real... apparently) but the script sparkles, the characters are well written and the performances are right on target. It's a fascinating story but, like a McDonald's meal, it left me a little unsatisfied.
