Peggy (Frances O'Connor) is a single mum in 1977 London, living in a dilapidated council home with young daughter Janet (Madison Wolfe) and Janet's siblings (Lauren Esposito, Patrick McAluey and Benjamin Haigh). Janet begins sleepwalking and having nocturnal conversations with a previous resident of the creepy house. Meanwhile, paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren (Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga reprising their roles from the first film) are exhausted after investigating the events around the haunting in Amityville. They're ready to hang up their crucifixes when they're called to find out the truth behind the events occurring in London. Will one more case bring them closer to the fate they've each had visions about?
The sequel to the 2013 paranormal thriller (let's just forget about the patchy 2014 spin-off Annabelle though she makes a brief cameo appearance) The Conjuring 2 showcases everything a film of the genre should be; an intriguing story well told. There seem to be a couple of chilling stories going on here, and when they collide things really become creepy. Special attention must be given to the cinematography, film editing and production design. Every frame is expertly used to tell a story that is engaging and entertaining. The performances are also really good (I could've sworn Marilyn Manson was the creepy ghost demon nun) with Madison Wolfe showing expertise in front of the camera that defies her youth. Yes, every cliche is here (flickering lights, creepy basement, doors closing on their own) and it's a little too long, but it's a scary and satisfying ride.
NOTE: Don't worry if you haven't seen the first film (though you probably would've if you're a fan of the genre) as the story is self-contained. Recommended. (ME)
