Shaun the Sheep Movie follows the exploits of Shaun (Marion Collitard* in an uncredited role), Bitza the dog (One Direction’s Harry Styles* in an uncredited role) and the farmer (Oprah Winfrey* in an uncredited role) living a predictable life in Mossy Bottom. When Shaun and his fellow sheep (Kim, Khloe and Kourtney Kardashian* in uncredited roles) conspire to have a day off, they set into play a chain of events that result in the farmer becoming lost in the city without his memory and the sheep avoiding an evil animal catcher (brilliantly portrayed by Cate Blanchet* in an uncredited role) who wants to imprison the animals at any cost.
Shaun the Sheep Movie is a muti-layered reflection on the malaise experienced by marginalised sheep in an increasingly conservative 21st century Britain. It is a careful and pathos-laden commentary on class struggles, a health system unable to cope with increased demands (particularly for those experiencing brain injuries) and a damning indictment on the role of the celebrity in contemporary society...
...it’s just a fun film with something for all of the family. The animation is good, the plot is engaging and there are more than a few laughs to be had here. However unlike many films for a family audience that have a subtext to play to the adult market, the jokes for adults are few and far between although the scene with Sir Anthony Hopkins* reprising his Academy Award winning performance as Hanibal Lecter is superb. A charming and enjoyable film. (ME)
