Reunited after 13 years apart, former colleagues Ray (Chiwetel Ejiofor), Claire (Nicole Kidman) and Jessica (Julia Roberts) are working together (unofficially) once more to complete some unfinished business. Jessica's daughter Carolyn (Zoe Graham) was the victim of the brutal murder, and Ray thinks it's time to reopen the case, as well as reopening the wounded relationships between all of them.
Secret in their Eyes is a remake of the 2009 Argentinian film La pregunta de sus ojos. With a timeline that jumps between the original murder (the trio working on counter terrorism operations in the months following the terror attacks of 2001) and the present day, the viewer is taken on an intriguing journey as pieces of a complex puzzle begin to join up. The dynamic between the leads is fascinating as they explore themes of guilt, regret, grief and an unrequited longing. The performances, though far from career defining, are very strong and the chemistry between all of them lights up the screen.
There are more than a few plot twists to keep you on your toes and there's an ambiguity to the plot that requires the viewer to pay careful attention at all times. It's well worth the effort though as the film moves steadily towards an unexpected and satisfying conclusion. (ME)
