It's just a normal day for pawn broken Les (John Brumpton) and his assistant Danny (Damien Hill), but the stories that intersect this 'normal' day takes many surprising twists and turns. There's a budding romance, a mother searching for a missing son, a constipated dog, a man who needs a gun, another who needs money in a hurry and two men looking for soup.
Pawno is as much a love letter to the gritty streets of Footscray as it is a dark, absurd, disturbing, quirky
and joyful snapshot in the life of inner Melbourne. Like its setting Pawno is a little rough around the edges and needs a little polish but the fragments all come together... just. There are a number of stories going on here; some are neatly resolved while others continue the sense of hopelessness that hangs over the film like a dark cloud. It's a violent, tender, raw and sweet collection of vignettes taking place during the day. It's not a film that will have wide appeal (and it's only available in limited release) but, as frustrating as it is at times, it's well worth a look. (ME)
