Jim Preston (Chris Pratt) is one of 5000 passengers in hibernation aboard the luxurious Avalon spaceship on its way to the colonised planet Homestead II. Unfortunately he's woken up 30 years into the 120 year voyage with no way of getting back into suspended animation. With only android bartender Alfred (Michael Sheen) for company, he check outs the other passengers (creepy much) and wakes up Aurora (Jennifer Lawrence) to keep him company, but there's a problem with the ship that threatens them all.
Squish together bits from 2001, Alien, Elysium, Gravity and The Love Boat and you've got Passengers, an action adventure sci-fi romance. It's actually messier than it sounds, but despite the significant holes in the plot it all comes together. The performances are like the breakfast dispenser on the Avalon; mechanical and reliable but with the occasional malfunction. The special effects are very good (keep an eye out for J-Law in the pool when the gravity controls malfunction) and the styling is very good (despite J-Laws mesh swimsuit fashion fail) though it begs the question why people would need something so spacious and opulent when they're asleep for most of the journey. It's a light and enjoyable romp in outer space that's very entertaining... in a creepy insterstellar stalker kinda way.
