Vee (Emma Roberts) is a high school student, grieving for the brother who died two years earlier and trying to build the courage to tell her mother (Juliette Lewis) that she's been offered a place in a college on the other side of the country. She's stuck in a rut until her friend Sydney (Emily Meade) encourages her to play Nerve, a mysterious online game where 'players' are paid to complete outrageous dares by the 'viewers'. In her first dare she meets fellow Nerve player Ian (Dave Franco) and the duo become a hit, but how far will they need to be pushed before they bail.
Nerve is a teen action thriller with an interesting pretext (think Pokémon Go meets The Hunger Games) set over an intense night playing the ultimate game of truth and dare... without the truth. The performances are good and the story is fun (with some intense moments) and although far from movie greatness it fills the entertainment brief. Overlaying text messages has become the new film cliche, it's used excessively here but the context is right. Enjoyable.
