Phillip (Sam Claflin) has grown up with his eccentric cousin Ambrose since his parents died. Soon after Phillip returns from schoolas an adult, his Ambrose's health begins to fail, so leaves for Florence hoping the warmer climate will restore him. In letters received from his cousin, Phillip discovers Ambrose has met and married the mysterious Rachel (Rachel Weisz). Following the death of Ambrose, Rachel travels to England to meet Phillip, who has become increasingly suspicious of her true motives.
Based on the iconic novel by Daphne du Maurier, My Cousin Rachel is a drama / romance / thriller with more twists and turns than a macrame pot-holder. Some of the performances are a little stiff and it a bit too long, but it's an intriguing story that will have you guessing until the end and beyond. The cinematography is beautiful with sweeping rural setting adding to the scale of the story. Hold on to your seat as your empathy is shifted around, and don't be surprised if you're reaching for a tissue or scratching you head (or both) when the credits roll. Intriguing.
