Tripp (Lucas Till) is in his last years of high school and struggling with the pressures of adolescence. There's a blossoming romance with tutor Meredith (Jane Levy), a growing antagonism with his mother's (Amy Ryan) local sherif boyfriend (Barry Pepper) and estrangement with his father (Frank Whaley). Working part time at a local wrecking yard for wheelchair-bound Mr Weathers (Danny Glover), he suddenly finds himself pursued by Reece Tenneson (Rob Lowe) and his henchman (Holt McCallany) over the trivial matter of a HUGE SLIMY AMPHIBIOUS MONSTER (think Jabba the Hutt with tentacles) THAT'S OPERATING HIS CAR. Cue the car chase scene.
Monster Trucks is an action adventure full of cars, car chases, loud noises and shiny things. It's best not to take any of it too seriously (we certainly didn't) and it's not going to win awards anytime soon, but if you like the idea of a film that's a mash-up of ET and The Dukes of Hazzard dipped in a big bucket of crazy then you're going to love this. We're not the target demographic and it sounds dreadful (and it kinda is at times) but it's also a light bit of escapist fun that doesn't take itself too seriously... and nor should you. The performances are so-so (though not nearly as bad as you might suspect) but it's the action sequences that drive this silly though enjoyable romp. Good school holiday viewing for boys from Nickelodeon.
