Following the death of his brother Joe (Kyle Chandler), Lee (Casey Affleck) returns home where he finds himself the reluctant guardian of his teenage nephew Patrick (Lucas Hedges). But Lee's return raises questions about his past, his former wife Randi (Michelle Williams) and the reasons behind his departure.
Manchester by the Sea is a film about grief, guilt and redemption. The seemingly straightforward story soon goes into an unexpected direction as the tragedy of the backstory emerges. The relationship between Lee and Patrick oscillates between a deeply poignant drama and a buddy comedy, and the connection between them is both warm and unsettling. The performances are very good and the large cast bring to life a group of characters that are physically and emotional damaged.
Manchester by the Sea is a challenging film of contrasts, with a complexity and simplicity of unlikeable characters placed in a beautiful setting. The drama will take place in you head and much as it does on screen as the threads of desperation for forgiveness begins to mesh. There are some unnecessarily frustrating moments but it's a well-crafted film with a powerful message and impressive performances.
