Katherine (Florence Pugh) has married Alexander (Paul Hilton) and begun her new life in a grand home in rural England. Alexander shows little interest in his new bride, and his father (Christopher Fairbank) only antagonises the situation. When the men leave Katherine is left alone with the staff, including maid Anna (Naomi Ackie) and new groomsman Sebastian (Cosmo Jarvis).
Lady Macbeth is an English gothic drama inspired by Nikolai Leskov's 1865 novella Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District. The story seems predictable enough until it takes one unexpected turn after another and cleverly shifts the viewer's empathy. Katherine is a woman who will stop at nothing to get what she wants... or what she thinks she wants. Florence Pugh is superb with a performance that is both explosive and subtle (watch this space as her star rises) as the focal point in a series of brilliant performances from the entire cast. Even the cat is amazing!
The cinematography is stunning, juxdeposing the breadth of the landscape and the intimacy of the plot as the story progresses down its twisted dark path. The production design and lighting add to the layers of the intensely dark story and the extended silences of much of the film add to a discomfort which becomes almost overwhelming. Simply put, this is an outstanding film of quiet sophistication that will renew your love of cinema. Highly recommended.
