When aspiring actress Mia (Emma Stone) meets aspiring jazz musician Sebastian (Ryan Gosling), it’s far from love at first sight. However the pair soon discover the symmetry between them, but will their dreams take them in different directions?
A love story in 5 acts, La La Land is a nostalgic and timeless yet contemporary story set against the real and fantasy worlds of Hollywood. It’s also one of the most intriguing, joyous and original films of 2016. From the musical opening number to the fantasy sequences, light and colour has been used with great effect to bring the witty and layered script to life. The characters are written with care and detail, and Stone and Gosling add further delight with a genuine chemistry as they sing, dance, talk and yell through all 128 lavish minutes. As much as it’s a love story, it’s also a warts and all love letter to Hollywood as maker (and breaker) of dreams. The cinematography is nothing short of stunning as reality meets fantasy in a dream-like haze of visual stimulation. But above all, La La Land is a delightful film experience that will have you whistling, swinging around lamp posts and possibly even breaking out into an impromptu tap routine on the way home... and I may have just done that on Church Street Brighton. A delightful film that deserves to do well at Oscar time and one that benefits from repeat screenings. Highly recommended.
