Kenny Wells (Matthew McConaughey) is a miner down on his luck when he has a dream which takes him to Indonesia to meet geologist Michael (Édgar Ramírez). The pair eventually discover gold and life changes dramatically for Kenny and long-suffering girlfriend Kay (Bryce Dallas Howard), but success is fleeting. Cue champagne cork montage and a tiger... just because.
Gold is a rags to riches to rags to riches to rags story of dumb luck and determination. Matthew McConaughey (complete with bad dental work) provides a performance that is passionate and manic without much in between. Bryce Dallas Howard is great despite wearing the most hideous outfit ever seen on screen; you'll know it when you see it. It's not a bad film and the story is interesting... but it feels like we'd seen it before with The Big Short, American Hustle and The Wolf of Wall Street. It's all very confusing trying to work out who's ripping off who and why anyone should care, but it's a fairly straightforward tale of success, loss, desperation and a tiger... just because. Enjoyable but meh.
