Ben (Viggo Mortensen) is living off the grid with his large family in their remote mountain home. But he's now a sole parent while his wife is away in hospital. When she dies he needs to make important decisions about honouring her memory, even though it could mean losing his children to the parents in-law who have never approved of the Ben's unconventional lifestyle.
Part human drama and part road trip, Captain Fantastic is a film which explores the intense relationships in a family that have removed themselves from society. The performances are very good (Viggo goes full frontal... if that floats your boat) and the young cast (with George MacKay particularly captivating as the socially awkward Bodevan) do a great supporting job. The plot goes in unexpected directions and the finale comes as quite a surprise, and it's a satisfying though unnecessarily convoluted story. It's possibly a bit too long and some of the imagery is confronting, but it's still an enjoyable experience.
