Corey (Toby Wallace) has just finished year 12 and is really for last night before the exams. It's Halloween and his group of friends are planning on a night of high jinx, but local misfit Jonah (Gulliver McGrath) might bring all of their plans unstuck.
One of the many appeals of Boys in the Trees is the uncertain direction of the plot, so we've kept descriptions deliberately sparse here. This coming-of-age drama is an Australian cinematic tour de force with performances that are strong an unnerving and a plot that is completely original. The cinematography and soundtrack are nothing short of stunning, and there are aspects of the plot that are uncomfortable as you grapple with bizarre and supernatural elements in a story that exposes the fragility of youth. This is a highly recommended film that deserves a lot more attention than it has received.
NOTE: We aim to publish reviews within 10 days of a film's local release date, but we held off on this one to see it on Halloween. Unfortunately by then it was down to a 3:30pm screening at the Jam Factory.
