Edina (Jennifer Saunders) is struggling to maintain her excessive lifestyle with her struggling PR business left with Lulu, Emma Bunton and Queen Noor. When her memoirs aren't received well at Penguin Books all looks hopeless, until Patsy (Joanna Lumley) discovers Kate Moss (as herself) has left her PR and is looking for new representation. But when Edina accidentally pushes Kate Moss into the Thames things go from bad to worse as they search for freedom in the south of France.
14 episodes, 5 specials and a 2-part farewell telemovie after Absolutely Fabulous 'ended' in 1995, the original cast have returned for yet another hilarious romp in familiar territory with Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie. 'Little bitch troll from hell' Saffy (Julia Swalha), mother (June Whitfield) and Bubble (Jane Horrocks) return along with Edina's nemesis Claudia Bing (Celia Imrie), Marshall and Bo (Christopher Ryan and Mo Gaffney) and Saffy's daughter Lola (Indeyarna Donaldson-Holness). There are celebrity cameos galore (Joan Collins, Barry Humphries, Graham Norton, Rebel Wilson, John-Paul Gaultier, Jerry Hall to name but a few) add to the delight of this film. Much of the dialogue has been recycled from the show's extensive back catalogue, but it wouldn't have worked any other way. The clever (and often bitchy) lines are exactly what we’ve come to expect, and they work here perfectly.
This isn't likely to win any new fans to the franchise, but it's a pleasing ride into familiar territory. Absolutely Fabulous always provided an insightful commentary of the values of its time and this film is no exception. It’s the perfect extension of a series that has been loved by so many for so long. Enjoyable, sweetie. (ME/DP)
